Two years ago, DC's Justice League was released in March of 2018 to atrocious reviews compared to The Marvel's Avengers it was an outright jumbled mess, only making $658 million worldwide at the box office.
I disliked the movie. Period. And planned to see it never again in this life. But now that the Snyder Cut is real, I am actually excited to watch the Justice League.
For those of you who are unaware what the Snyder Cut Is -
Director Zack Snyder originally planned and shot The Justice League as a 4-hour superhero epic, but due to an unfortunate tragedy had to leave the project. Some believe that Snyder was fired from the project and it is because of the fact that Warner Bros. apparently found the Snyder Cut “unwatchable” to begin with.
Came in the avengers director Joss Whedon with a new vision who shot the entire movie again keeping only 30 mins of the Snyder cut. In any case, when Snyder was out and so was his vision of the film. It’s always difficult to juggle two very different visions of a story, something the new Star Wars trilogy depicts better.
We got jumbled, rushed, a hasty theatrical version in its place—a version that Snyder himself has never actually watched. While Warner Bros. stated that Whedon stuck largely to the template set forth by Snyder, there were major changes, and the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement was born, with passionate fans clamoring for Warner Bros. to release Snyder’s version and naysayers claiming, over and over again, that it would never happen. If you have watched JL you can easily observe the vast difference from the trailer of the Snyder Cut.
What appeared to be just a dream for everyone involved changed when HBO Max was born.
Clearly, Warner Bros. saw a way to attract subscribers by releasing the film exclusively on HBO Max. Instead of returning to theater Snyder’s, Justice League will launch in 2021 on the new streaming service.
My Take-
The Justice League was a mess in large part because we didn’t even really care about the characters and the stakes just seemed so preposterous. We never really had time to get to know any of the newcomers, and we were all still a little unhappy about Batman and Superman’s last outing. My biggest hope is that Zack Snyder’s Justice League changes that. The extra time spent on character advancement should help make for a better story.
It’s good that they’re taking their time with this, at the very least. Another year or so to work out the kinks, finish special effects, do more voice work or full reshoots, get the script where it needs to be, all the editing and changes. It’s much more than just a Director’s Cut and it’s going to be a major undertaking for everyone involved, especially with all the lockdowns in place.
Ultimately, I’m glad it’s happening. I didn’t think it would, at least not anytime soon, but the era of streaming has changed the game.
The Only Question now is, can you turn something this bad into something actually good, or will it just be a little bit better?
